Two Writers, One Person: A Declaration of Intent

Well, hello there, future readers! If you’re stumbling upon this, welcome to the very first dispatch from the mind of Troy Q. Archer. Consider this my official declaration of intent, a soft launch into the grand, slightly chaotic adventure of putting words onto pages and, eventually, into your hands.

Two writers inhabit this space. Only one of them breathes, pays taxes, and occasionally runs after children. On one hand, you have Troy Q. Archer, the aspiring high fantasy novels and magical realism books author, specifically writing for the US market. On the other hand, there’s Fábio M. Barreto, an award-winning Brazilian author of science fiction and magical realism, whose work has already found its audience in Portuguese.

While Fábio’s past and experiences definitely inform the person behind Troy, what you’ll read here is distinctly Troy’s voice, embarking on this new journey for an English-speaking audience. It’s a bit like having a co-pilot who offers brilliant, unexpected advice, often in a language only I can understand.

Yep. I tried to create Troy using AI. This one is the least horrible of the batch.

The Grand Challenge: Recreating a Writer in a New Language

This blog is, in many ways, about a grand experiment: facing writing in another language, to recreate yourself. It’s more than just a different vocabulary or sentence structure. It’s like when you speak another language out loud – your voice changes, the rhythm feels different, sometimes even your gestures adapt. The written word, I’ve found, does the same. It shifts, subtly, like the light just before a storm. And yes, for those of you wondering, it’s true. Linguists and psychologists actually study this phenomenon. It really is different.

So, if Troy sometimes sounds a little different than you’d expect, blame the linguistics. Or maybe the Brazilian Coca-Cola. Yes, just like the Mexican Coke, the Brazilian one is waaay better than the US version. It’s the water and the sugar, baby!

This isn’t just about translating ideas; it’s about shifting the very sensibilities of how those ideas are formed and expressed, adapting to the unique literary flavor and expectations of the English-speaking market. The path from writing in Portuguese to English has its own set of hurdles and unexpected creative leaps. It’s like learning to walk again, but with a quill that occasionally writes in riddles.

This is why Troy Q. Archer isn’t just a pen name; it’s a distinct authorial persona crafted for this specific challenge and market. It’s an exercise in creative alchemy, turning one kind of ink into another (and hoping it doesn’t go sideways!).

What to Expect from Troy

So, what can you expect from this little corner of the internet?

  • The Creative Process (in English): We’ll dive into the messy, glorious world of fantasy world-building tips, fantasy character development, and the general ups and downs of crafting high fantasy and magical realism specifically for the US market. Think less “how-to guide” and more “a writer’s brain having a conversation with itself… and occasionally losing the argument, loudly.”
  • Inspiration & Observation: How everyday life – a dream so vivid it deserves its own chapter, a weird moment observed in the wild, or a League of Legends game gone terribly, hilariously wrong – sparks ideas for sprawling fantasy worlds, now viewed through an English-language lens. Sometimes, inspiration hits you with the unexpected force of a sudden tropical downpour, like a good plot twist you didn’t see coming.
  • The Author’s Journey: This is my unique path towards becoming a published author in a new language. You’ll find insights, learnings, and hopefully, milestones, all part of this author journey blog for unpublished fantasy author insights. It’s less a straight road and more a meandering quest with occasional dragon encounters and mandatory snack breaks, usually involving pão de queijo.

Troy’s Corner: My Not-So-Secret Obsessions (Just for Fun)

Archery is my solo passion. Worry not: I will not bombard you with fake motivational lessons from my range visits.

Even a writer needs to step away from the keyboard, and my particular brand of “not-so-secret obsessions” is pretty straightforward:

  • Recurve Archery: Just being at the range, or even shooting at the target bag in my backyard, is enough. It’s a peaceful sport for me, all about self-awareness, focus, and procedure. I never miss the target, though hitting the yellow is a whole different quest.
  • Mugs: Yes, I collect them. I have so many, most of which I’ve never actually used, and I don’t even drink coffee! However, I do own two rather magnificent medieval handmade pewter tankards that sit proudly on my desk. They make excellent pen holders, or excellent vessels for very serious thoughts, depending on the day.
  • League of Legends (LoL): Full confession: I play LoL, and I’m really, really bad at it. It’s my chaotic escape, proving that even a fantasy writer can’t always conquer the Summoner’s Rift. My brain, bless its ADHD heart, certainly keeps me on my toes. It’s either a masterclass in frustration or a fantastic lesson in perseverance. Probably both. You know, like staring at a blank page.
  • Food Love: Oh, and I love food. All kinds. No pictures, just the honest admission. If it’s edible, I’m probably a fan. Especially if it involves a good picanha with friends.

These are just a few quirks that makes up Troy, the writer. They’re here for fun, not for deep life lessons. Unless you consider “don’t feed the enemy bot lane” a deep life lesson, which, frankly, it might be.

So, with that, the gates are open, and the ink is flowing. I’m eager to share this adventure with you. In the spirit of new beginnings, what kind of stories are currently inspiring your imagination? Or, for those of you who create, have you ever had to reinvent your craft, or tackle a significant new challenge? Let me know in the comments below!
